Design Challenge and Design Ideas

The challenge was bringing a burst of new life to this corner of Merrion Square, to embrace the rich history of this unique part of Dublin while creating cosmopolitan interiors with innovative and client-centric design solutions.
The client wanted us to create vibrant and unique spaces that would attract not only the hotel guest but people from far and wide.
Located amongst galleries and museums in the heart of Georgian Dublin, there was to be a particular focus on Irish art and emerging Irish artists. Selecting the right artwork to accentuate The Leinster’s stylish interiors was an important part of the hotel’s design process. There are over 300 curated pieces of original art from more than 80 artists. As a result, the art collection at The Leinster is a dynamic reflection of Ireland’s contemporary art scene.

How the brief was fulfilled

The Leinster’s design is a celebration of Dublin’s historic heritage, seamlessly blending old and new to create a timeless aesthetic.
When planning the hotel interior layout, there was a key focus to create different social and experiential spaces to eat in, drink in and hang out. We achieved that by creating a variety of unique and cosmopolitan spaces that are experiential and memorable.

The design elements in Collins Club seamlessly blend historical elements with modern design. There are intentional nods to Georgian glam, with dimmed lighting, detailed ceilings and a bar design that leans into the architecture and history of the surrounding Georgian area.

The original part of the exterior façade was retained and incorporated into a detailed, bespoke, sculptural back bar design. We approached Nolan’s Group, whom with their extensive experience and expertise in bespoke tiles and glazing, helped us create a dramatic and unique focal point.

Jean-Georges Rooftop Bar & Restaurant, on the top floor, has spectacular views over Georgian Dublin. It has a timeless classical French brasserie style Interior with white panelled walls, a pink veined marble bar, carefully curated lighting, seating and finishes throughout.

A decorative timber clad ceiling and 3-meter-high olive trees soften the expanse of architectural glazing throughout while hand painted murals by an Irish emerging artist Joanne Murphy, cover the walls and ceiling of the terrace area.
Central to The Leinster’s design ethos is an unwavering dedication to sustainability, prominently reflected in every aspect of its construction and interior design. The hotel showcases this commitment through the inventive incorporation of reclaimed materials and the repurposing of existing resources. For example, the restaurant ceiling is finished in reclaimed timber, showcasing the beauty of sustainable design.

Accessibility was a crucial consideration throughout the project. The Leinster Hotel is accessible to all guests through accessible bedrooms for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility, to public restrooms fitted with grab rails, adequate transfer space, accessible sinks with lever taps and emergency alarm pull cords. Lifts run between all floors, providing ease of access through the hotel, from The Collins Club to the rooftop restaurant.

The design of interiors showcases an extensive attention to detail, combining contemporary and classic elements. Colourful textiles, warm accents, and vintage-inspired furnishings create a warm yet sophisticated space.
