Design Challenge and Design Ideas

The Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) are the champions of integrated education within Northern Ireland.
Our brief was to to develop impactful education materials, with the goal to create a “bias-busting” teaching resource that packs a punch. Specifically, the creation of two short animations that encourage teachers and the general public to engage with integrated education.
The challenge was to create an engaging resource that would encourage discussion about some of the heavier issues of our day, from Black Lives Matter to gender discrimination. To address this, Whitenoise set out to explore new styles and approaches of design and animation which would reflect balance the heavy subject material with light and punchy visuals.
The animation needed to make a lasting impression within a short period of time and ultimately stir people to engage more with NICIE.

How the brief was fulfilled

Through a collaborative process of mood board development, the client settled on a striking style for the animation. Our approach utilised 2D animation with a bold colour palette derived from the NICIE brand, allowing key elements to stand out.
The story was told in a unique way, taking influences from historic figures.
Bold copy was used throughout, communicating essential information but in a way that would stir emotion within the viewer.
The animation, music bed and sound effects all contribute to a striking, thought provoking and inspiring feel throughout,
which reflects the personality of NICIE as a organisation. Not only does the animation communicate what NICIE does, it also accurately depicts the change integrated education can make to the lives of teachers, parents and children throughout Northern Ireland.
Produced entirely in house by our motion graphics team, it was storyboarded and produced within the space of a four weeks so that NICIE could use it in the run up to the start of the school year. Our team were incredibly dedicated and there were many late nights, but it was worth it.
NICIE were absolutely blown away by the final result and have used it in schools across Northern Ireland.
