Design Challenge and Design Ideas

I was commissioned by Druid Theatre to illustrate and design the poster for their production of Sive by John B Keane. I was to produce an image that would communicate the tenderness of the heroine and the terrible events of the play, using a realist drawn style with an element of the fantastical to it.

How the brief was fulfilled

After much consultation with Garry Hynes, the director, and using another of my illustrations as a jumping-off point, I submitted a range of possible compositions, all centering on the figure of the dead or sleeping girl. It was felt appropriate that I use a realist, traditional style (pencil on paper) as this chimed well with the play’s period take on traditional culture in the west of Ireland. The resulting poster appeared on sites in and around the Gaiety Theatre, on bus sides, on A1 posters city-wide, online and on a range of printed material.
